Wera stainless screwdrivers

Wera produce high-end, hard-wearing stainless steel screwdrivers which are strong, finely engineered and do not rust. This makes them perfect as a long term investment to keep in your kit box. It is especially important to use a top quality Torx screwdriver when constructing foils. A cheap, chrome-plated one can rust, causing damage to your precious stainless steel foil bolts and frustration in the process.

The Wera screwdriver we stock is:

  • Torx 30 (TX30 x 115mm long) – for most foil bolts

USS Tefgel

Foils are technical bits of kit that need a little TLC. Whilst they should be regularly disassembled and rinsed in fresh water this is not always practical. That’s where Tefgel comes in. It should be applied sparingly to every connecting surface in the foil assembly as well as to every stainless bolt and fitting. This helps to prevent seizing (the sight of someone drilling into their seized foil bolts is not a pleasant one!) We use USS Tefgel which is made in the USA and is the highest quality on the market.

SPECIAL ADVICE: Take care to select the correct kit!

Getting your initial kit wrong, could mean that your progression will be slow and difficult. We have met a lot of people who have rushed out to buy kit early, felt pressured kit that is too small and wished they had bought something bigger. The ‘bigger board’ (around 130 - 150 litres for adults >75kg) is the one that will help you to navigate steadily through those first tentative flights to achieve sustained flights and to start going for gybes. Lighter people of <75kg may opt for a 115 litre board. Those who are lighter and have extensive experience in other activities such as windfoiling, kitefoiling etc. may get away with learning on a smaller board yet most of us are likely to fit into the 115/130/140/150 litre board categories defined above.

If you outgrow your first big board in 3 months, 6 months, 12 months, 24 months then please see this as success! The board did the job for you and got you to the point where you are ready to go smaller. You can celebrate this by selling it and buying a smaller one. Will you lose money? More then likely yes, a little, yet that will have been the natural cost of progressing you through the essentials. Without a big board in that early, informative phase, you might still be floundering around wondering why you are still struggling to stand up and turn around.

It’s all about having the right tool for the job. People who buy kit that is too small to learn on typically give the following reasons:

  • “I was told to go for a small board as I will grow out of a bigger board and need to change it.”

  • “It looked cool compared to the bigger boards.”

  • “It fits in my car and I don’t want to get a roof rack.”

  • “It fits in my cupboard...it slides away under the bed.”

  • “It was cheap.”

  • "My mate was offloading it."
